Welcome to ICAWA

ICAWA stands for the Infection Control Association of Western Australia. In 1976 the Infection Control Nurses Association of Western Australia was formed as special interest group of the Australian Nursing Federation.

Since then the Association has undergone many changes as the practice of infection control has gained recognition as a specialist field of healthcare. In 1989 the Association became multidisciplinary and adopted the current name.

ICAWA and AICA - As a member of ICAWA you will automatically become a member of the Australian Infection Control Association (AICA). A representative from ICAWA sits on the Executive Committee of AICA providing representation at a national level.

Membership with ICAWA

The following membership categories are available:

Ordinary Any healthcare professional in Western Australia with an interest in infection control who is able to contribute to the objectives of the Association.
Associate Any healthcare professional outside Western Australia with an interest in infection control who is able to contribute to the objectives of the Association.
Commercial A person representing a company or business, the products of which are associated with infection control, and who is able to contribute to the objectives of the Association and who is invited by the Association to become a member.

Members include professionals in:

  • Infection prevention and control (Acute and Aged Residential Care)
  • Public health
  • Community Health
  • Infection Control Consultants
  • Related professional organisations.

Benefits of Membership

  • Meetings Regular meetings provide an opportunity for networking through interaction with other members.
  • Education quarterly sessions focusing on topical and practical issues affecting ICPs,
  • State Conference Held each year provides information and forum for ideas related to infection prevention and control.
  • Scholarships for financial assistance are available to ordinary members wishing to attend state, national and international seminars and conferences, pursue other educational opportunities and research.
  • Newsletter Published quarterly and distributed to all members. The ICAWA Newsletter aims to address topics that affect ICPs.
  • As a member of ICAWA and AICA you will receive the Australian Infection Control Journal and AICA Newsletter four times a year
  • The AICA Website includes a WA page with updated information and association activities. This site includes access to a members only area.

ICAWA Objectives

  • To promote and assist in the provision of health care by serving the needs and aims of all disciplines relating to infection control;
  • To maintain, promote and enhance the profession of infection control through education, communication, research, professional relations and wherever possible standardisation of activities and procedures relating to infection control;
  • To provide a forum through which Members can discuss any matters relating to infection control;
  • To promote and foster good relations and cooperation between Members;
  • To cooperate with any other Association or person if in the opinion of the Association or the Executive such co operation between Members should exist; and
  • To provide financial assistance to Members to attend conferences or other activeness which further the objects of the Association.

Note that ICAWA will not hold a State Conference in 2010 due to ICAWA hosting the National AICA 2010 Conference in Perth from 4 to 6 October. For information and details see www.aicaconference.org.au

ICAWA Annual Educational Scholarships *2011
ICAWA announces the inaugural ICAWA Annual Educational Scholarships . Two scholarships will be awarded annually:
· ONE Postgraduate Scholarship
· ONE Training Scholarship

*Both Scholarships will be for educational activities for current financial ICAWA members for study in 2011. Applications close on 31 October 2011. Full details see information and application form HERE
